Ben Conroy – Fashion Designer

Ben Conroy, originally from Adelaide and only living in Perth for a little while , has taken the West Australian Fashion Industry by storm.  Ben is the owner of Revolution The Label which was developed with the aim of delivering adaptable everyday pieces for men and women based around simplicity and comfortable minimalistic shapes. I had the honour of meeting and working with Ben at the beginning of this year and I can honestly say he is one of the most kind, honest and hard-working people I know and you can see it in his designs. Today I had the chance to catch up with him at his pop up store held in the Bayview Shopping Centre.

When did you start your brand:

I started Revolution The Label in 2013, it basically started because I wanted black and white basics and I couldn’t find them in the shops at good prices, so I wanted to create basics for myself to wear but also for other people to wear, so it’s a very wearable collection and is based on minimalism and simplicity.

Do you have any muses for your collection:

I do, when I am designing I like to picture particular people, it does change. Men I can see or would like to see, is Jared Leto, David Beckham, Johnny Depp, Lenny Kravitz. I guess I am inspired by the dirty, rock and roll, american vibe but then also inspired be the Australian climate and trends that coming through. I don’t follow trends  but I guess you have to be open to what people are buying.

For girls, I would have to say the Olsen twins, love the Olsen twins, Nicole Richie back in her boho days and there are some models I would like to see.

Well that’s a great Segway into our next question, who are some of your favourite models and why?

International models, I love Miranda Kerr and Cara Delevingne, I don’t know what it is about them but I feel like they both represent a very masculine energy from such a beautiful, petite look. They both hold themselves very well and I think they both have a great sense of self, they aren’t in the modelling world to be famous, they are in the modelling world to be models and they represent themselves and  their brand really well and every campaign shoot that they do, they seem to morph and present it really well.

Some male models are Jarred Scott, Mariano Di Vano and there is a model I would love to work with called,  Robin Paulie Stenberg, I love that Scandinavian look.

What do you love most about fashion and style?

What I love about it is, it’s so subjective, before I was in fashion, I used to think, it was black and white, you were either fashionable or not, but fashionable for me now, has a new meaning these days, everyone has their own take on it and whether that be, someone doesn’t have the money to wear high-end fashion. You can definitely put together your own ensemble and can be from anywhere.

At the moment I am wearing jeans from supre, that cost $20 and one of my Revolution shirts. What I do love about fashion and style is you can go out and buy a high-end piece and wear  with a low-end piece and no one would know and for me , all I wear is black and white,so  its very easy for me to do that with different labels, I also love that people can be so experimental and its a reflection of their personality.

Each person is completely different and if you bump into someone and you think I would never wear of put that together myself but that person has and they rocked it and that’s their style.

If you could steal any celebrities wardrobe, who would it be and why?

I think David Beckham, he has a pretty impressive wardrobe, he has some really edgy, grungy pieces but also has some beautiful suits and tailored pieces.
